Diarrhoea & Travellers Diarrhoea

Diarrhea may be caused by a temporary problem, like an infection, or a chronic problem, such as an intestinal disease.

A few of the more common causes of diarrhea are:

  • Bacterial infections. Several types of bacteria, consumed through contaminated food or water, can cause diarrhea. Common culprits include Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, and Escherichia coli.
  • Reaction to medicines, such as antibiotics, blood pressure medications, and antacids containing magnesium.
  • Food intolerances. Some people are unable to digest some component of food, such as lactose, the sugar found in milk.
  • Parasites can enter the body through food or water and settle in the digestive system. Parasites that cause diarrhea include Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, and Cryptosporidium.

  • Viral infections. Many viruses cause diarrhea, including rotavirus, Norwalk virus, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, and viral hepatitis.
  • Intestinal diseases, like inflammatory bowel disease or celiac disease.
  • Functional bowel disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, in which the intestines do not work normally.

  • People who visit foreign countries are at risk for traveler's diarrhea, which is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with bacteria, viruses, or, sometimes, parasites. Traveler's diarrhea is a particular problem for people visiting developing countries. Visitors to the United States, Canada, most European countries, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand do not face much risk for traveler's diarrhea.

Babies & children

The key to a  healthy child is a strong immune system. When functioning properly, the immune system fights diesease producing organisms such as bacateria, viruses, fungi and parasites.

All children are continuously espoused to these pathogens, but exposure does not mean a child will get sick. A strong immune system provides a child with powerful natural defenses against disease. Conversely, a child with weakened immune system is vulnerable or more susceptible to cold, flu and more serious illnesses. Researchers from John Hopkins University carried out a prospective, double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study on 118 healthy infants aged 3-24 months old. Infants were assigned to receive a standard milk based formula containing equal doses of beneficial bacteria or unsupplemented formula.

Another study proved that beneficial bacteria help children with  diarrhea  Rosenfeldt V and colleagues found that beneficial bacteria ameliorated acute diarrhea in hospitalized children and reduced the period of rotavirus excretion at the same time. This reduce the length of hospital stay.

They are taught to work by altering the microbial ecology in the gut of the person who ingests them.
Protect your child with probiotics

There is no need to deny your baby the proven benefits of Probiotic supplementation; however, we live in an increasingly polluted world. Baby bacteria is declining, while dangerous drug-resistant bacteria is increasing. All babies - whether breast-fed or bottle-fed-need the protection of friendly bacteria.
If you are a pregnant mother-to-be, here's a special reminder. Whether your child is born vaginally or by caesarian section, he or she will arrive clean, healthy, and free of bacterial contamination as long as you are. The health of your unborn child begins within you.

Pregnant Mum

Women who take beneficial bacteria during pregnancy and breastfeeding may help lower the risk of their child developing eczema, according to a study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (2002; 109:119-121). The significance of this new information is that it suggests mother may be able to protect their children's health, even before they are born.

Eczema is a skin condition characterized by severe itching, often when redness and flaking. Some studies suggest food allergies may be one cause enzyme.

Researchers gave 62 pregnant women a capsule of beneficial bacteria or a placebo four weeks before and 3 month following delivery. All infants were breastfeed during the 3-month of the study.

The children then evaluated periodically for 18 more months so their skin health could be assessed. The incidence of eczema in the children whose mother took beneficial bacteria was 15% compared with almost 50% in children whose mothers took the placebo. No side effects were observed in the mothers or children during beneficial bacteria supplementation.

Administering probiotics during pregnancy and breast-feeding thus offers a safe and effective mode of promoting the immunoprotective potential of breast-feeding and provides protection against topic eczema during the first 2 years of life.

Indigestion & Stomach Bloating

What is Indigestion?
Indigestion, also called upset stomach or dyspepsia, is discomfort or a burning feeling in the upper abdomen. Indigestion is often accompanied by nausea, abdominal bloating, belching, and sometimes vomiting.

What Causes Indigestion?
Indigestion might be caused by a disease in the digestive tract. However, for many people, indigestion is caused by eating too much, eating too quickly, eating high-fat foods, or eating during stressful situations. Smoking, drinking too much alcohol, using medications that irritate the stomach lining, can also cause indigestion or make it worse.

Symptoms of Indigestion?
Some of the most common symptoms are:

    • Pain or burning in your upper stomach-usually in the middle

    • Nausea

    • Bloating

    • Burping that you have a hard time controlling

    • Heartburn

How to avoid Indigestion?
The best way to avoid indigestion is to avoiding the foods and situations that seem to cause indigestion.Through the proper digestion and elimination of food; gas and bloating can be minimized. Maldigestion can cause belching, flatulence, bloating, heartburn, as well as serious nutritional deficiencies leading to weight gain and all kinds of digestive disorders. These, in turn, may cause allergies, aches and pains, fatigue, skin problems, moodiness, etc. Consumption of beneficial microorganism can help to eliminate these symptoms by aiding in proper digestive function.

Elderly

If you are over 60 you should take either probiotic drinks, yogurts or capsules as they will protect you from developing such bowel conditions as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), says researchers from Reading University, UK. Elderly people have a much lower number of friendly bacteria in their intestines than younger adults, say the researchers. Elderly people also have more harmful bacteria in their intestines than younger adults. Some studies have shown that friendly bacteria levels in the gut of a typical over 60-year-old is one thousandth of that of a younger adult. The elderly are much more prone to gastrointestinal infections and bowel condition

Head researcher, Glenn Gibson, Reading University, UK, said that probiotics protect elderly people from the complication caused by bacteria which cause food poisoning, such as E.coli. He cited 80 human studies with positive results against bowel conditions, such as traveler’s diarrhea, IBS and antibiotic-associated diarrhea

As antibiotics reduce the levels of all strains of bacteria in the intestines, anyone taking antibiotics, regardless of age, would benefit from taking probiotic supplements, say the scientists.

SHOCKING NEWS! – 5 million IBS sufferers in Malaysia

There are 5 million of Malaysians[1] who suffer from abdominal pains, bloating, constipation, diarrhea and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). You may be one of them. Check out the symptoms below :

Are you suffering from one or more of these symptoms?

Stomach/abdominal pain
Diarrhea or constipation
Bloating Excessive gas
Fatigue Lower back pain
Shooting pains Heartburn

You can influence the composition of the food and bad bacteria in your gut by optimizing your diet and supplementing it with high-quality friendly bacteria. It's also thought that IBS sufferers may be particularly sensitive to the rumbling and burbling that goes on in the bowel during digestion. What you eat may play a role, too. IBS symptoms that stem from pathogenic bacteria, bacterial imbalances or poor digestion of food may be eliminated through the consumption of probiotics. The most powerful solution found for many types of digestive discomfort is supplementing your body with ‘good’ or beneficial bacteria.
